They are physical realms which serve as doorways.

One was a valley and a sacred spring. An old friend, an MIU grad 
incidentally, and a group of amateur archaeologists, geomancers etc. 
rediscovered it while we were on an expedition on the east coast of the 
US. It was extraordinary. It turned out to be the place where these 
tablets were said to revealed--one of the largest natural springs I 
have ever seen. Thru the connections that we just 'happened upon' we 
ended up meeting the great, great, great grandson of the last chief of 
the tribe. They kindly took us in as members of the tribe and initiated 
us into the turtle clan (a branch of this eastern Indian tribe). Their 
symbols were the same as ones seen in both Taoism and Tibetan/Mongolian 
Buddhism.
