You have to wonder how much of his cluelessness was real. Maharishi didn't get rich and his movement is underfunded. He lived in a cave with Guru Dev for years. Guru Dev instructed him to take TM to the West as his mission. He sounded like the someone I would talk to at the breakfast table at a residence course in 1975.
