BTW, I was the "Park Ranger" at the Manor. That meant I was in charge
of the sewage treatment plant. Every spring we'd have to pump some of
the ponding sewer water (liquids, no solids) out of the "holding" ponds
because all the run off from the melting snow would swell the ponds to
the point of overflowing and totally washing their banks away. Any way
we saw pumping as a lesser evil. One day somebody came to get me on a
sleepy Friday afternoon and told me "Bernie" was at the front desk. He
was the state inspector. After several expletives I snuck around some
buildings and high tailed it for the ponds to remove the pump before he
saw it. As I was racing toward the pond, I saw Bernie jump in his
truck at reception - the race was on! I got to the pump and w/ my own
adrenaline pumping, ripped it from the pond only to see Bernie's truck
spitting gravel, leaping out of his truck, running toward me shouting.
It was a beautiful moment. I dropped the pump and burst out laughing.
It was such a bizarre scene. He cooled off instantly, laughed too,
chewed me out as best he could and told me a funny story. He once went
to another spot being used as a religious retreat. He said their
sewage facility was woefully neglected. When he told the pastor about
it, he got indignant, saying they'd never experienced a problem. So
Bernie trotted him out to the septic field. The pastor said "There's
nothing wrong here" and bravely strode in to the field, only to slog
in up to his chest. Bernie thought that was pretty funny.
Funny what events can bring you closer to someone.

PS BTW Next time somebody is tempted to tell me I don't know,sh*t,
please use a different cliche.

PPS when I left the Manor, the rest of the Maintainace Crew presented
me a wooden plaque that a guy named Craig ( I believe we called him
Durango) burned the inscription in to the wood w/ some sort of device.
The plaque said "The Jeffrey A. Fischer Memorial Park" and they hung
it from a 4x4 post at the entrance to the sewage facility. Still
brings a tear to my eye. They were good, dedicated men.

PPPS I have another Manor story about almost getting arrested if any
one's interested.
