Will Shields' blues catch Dr. Cruise?

June 3, 2005

Best two of three falls for the featherweight
championship of Hollywood?

Yes, Brooke Shields is lashing out at Tom Cruise, who
recently called the actress "irresponsible" for using
antidepressants for the postpartum blues.

Shields, whose recent book "Down Came the Rain"
chronicles her personal battle following the birth of
her daughter, Rowan, in 2003, says Cruise, "should
stick to saving the world from aliens and let women
who are experiencing postpartum depression decide what
treatment options are best for them." (That's a snarky
allusion to his forthcoming "War of the Worlds"
movie.)

Doctor Cruise made his diagnosis on TV's "Access
Hollywood," saying, "When someone says (medication)
has helped them, it is to cope, it didn't cure
anything. There is no science. There is nothing that
can cure them whatsoever."

Cruise, 41, who is an ardent advocate of Scientology,
which condemns mind-altering prescriptions of any
kind, instead suggests that women care for themselves
with "vitamins and exercise." He then added about
Shields: "I care about Brooke Shields because I think
she is an incredibly talented women, (but) look at
where her career has gone."

Careful, bucko -- you may be following her. Radar
magazine reports CAA agency wranglers Rick Nicita and
Kevin Huvane have been frantically pleading with
Cruise's sister-manager Lee Anne DeVette to "rein Tom
in" regarding his very public advocacy of Scientology
and those recent interview comments, including his
Oprah Winfrey appearance where Cruise jumped around
and flexed his muscles to show his love for Katie
Holmes.
