Their total of five first- and second-place awards compares to a total of four won by the 27 schools entered from California. Schools from Texas won a total of seven, and Wisconsin had three. All other states and countries had fewer first- and second-place awards. There were 860 teams competing from nearly as many schools all of them at the global competition by virtue of having been state or country champs. There were 4060 teams in each category of competition. Unprecedented Success "This level of success is just unprecedented," said coach Mark Headlee. "No other school that I know of has ever done anything like this." Speculating on the reasons for their success, Mr. Headlee noted that being a private school or being highly intelligent students doesn't explain it, because the same is true of many of the other participating schools. In fact, schools often reserve this program for their top students in the talented-and-gifted program, in contrast to Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment, where any student can participate. He believes their success is the direct result of Consciousness- BasedSM education. "Students are able to integrate this knowledge with their creative expression. The Transcendental Meditation technique is the only variable by which you can explain this phenomenon." Destination ImagiNation Destination ImagiNation is an international creative-problem-solving program that develops cooperative teamwork and critical thinking, as well as building technical and performance skills. The participants come up with ingenious and often wildly entertaining solutions to complex challenges.
