One thing Maharishi has consistently said is that he doesn't matter
with regard to propagating enlightenment. I am paraphasing, but I have
heard him say something similar to this; that he is not the focus of
attention with regard to enlightening the world. (perhaps Bob can find
the quote?)

So what better way to get the attention off yourself, instead of
saying 'worshipping me or paying obeisance to me is not important on
your path', than to be a target for failure, contradiction, and cold
hearted behavior?

It does away with those who would take mere remarks by Maharishi to
that effect as mere modesty. And especially to claim the limelight for
oneself and then fail spectacularly in a host of endeavors would
certainly turn people off.

Intentional or not, it sure gets us all questioning the TM knowledge
in all its depth and breadth, and only leaves the very wise and very
foolish seeing Maharishi as perfect.
