The original reference was to the ORIGIN of the mantras and how they manifest within the context of tantra. Mantra is the sound aspect of that manifestation. Anything else you imagine is not what the original point was referring do--certainly not some sort of recent yogic technique (however interesting that might be to you). I'm talking about the actual manifestation of the tantra itself and how that arises in awareness.
