Lol ! Thats nothing ! New and Notable By Anne Stephenson The Arizona Republic SWIMMING TO ANTARTICA By Lynne Cox Knopf In 1972, at just 15, Cox set a world record for swimming the English Channel. When someone broke the record, she came back the next year and set it again. After that, she swam New Zealand's Cook Strait, negotiated 42-degree tides in the Strait of Magellan, was almost eaten by a shark as she swam around the Cape of Good Hope, dodged icebergs in Alaska's Glacier Bay and, after an 11-year effort to obtain permission, swam the Bering Strait to the Soviet island Big Diomede. She did all of this without a wetsuit. Why? Partly because she was suited to it -- she had trained so hard and so acclimated her body to cold water that she was the equivalent of Lance Armstrong with body fat. But mostly she did it because it gave her joy, and because she has determination to spare. Her book describes the logistics, danger and triumph of her open-water swims. "It is amazing how incredible the human body is that it can do so much," she writes. "That it can go beyond the everydayness of life; that it can be extraordinary and powerful, and harbor a spirit of hope and pure will." http://www.smmirror.com/volume5/issue34/new_and_notable.asp To subscribe, send a message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Or go to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FairfieldLife/ and click 'Join This Group!'
