MURDERED HINDU priest was gay predator, suspect police. The detectives investigating the murder last week of a popular and much admired priest, 42-year-old Harish Purohit in Leicester, now believe that he led a double life and was known as a predator by the young gays in the city. The sordid details of his attempts to blackmail and threaten young men to have sex with him have been unravelled by investigators. Purohit's body was found by his father and elder brother in their family home on October 20/21. He had been stabbed 13 times.
It was initially said that some people were jealous of his popularity as a social worker while many others were angry at his attempts to modernise rituals and the practise of Hinduism in every day life. But, although they are not confirming it, the police now suspect that he could have been murdered by one of his blackmail victims.
The Times carried a story which bolstered the police theory. A young man who was allegedly a victim of Purohit told the daily that the priest's respected position masked manipulative personality _ with a voracious sexual appetite for gay youngsters. Another one has told The Times that Purohit picked up strangers from the city's dangerous gay cruising areas. He allegedly took them to the house where he was found murdered. This young man also related to the daily the manner in which he was blackmailed by Purohit.
