Best estimates is that they've only been going for 100 million years. On Earth which looks like it formed about 4.5 billion years ago, we don't find any convincing evidence of life before 3.5 billion years ago. So it took 1 billion years for life to get established, and that was only primitive bacteria, not super-advanced pan-dimensional beings.
