Fear of ridicule is a highly potent motivator.  You
see it in France a *lot*.  Basically, the whole
culture in French elementary and high schools is
built on this premise.  Those who "act up" are
publicly ridiculed.  It's the worst thing that
can happen to you.  As a result, there is a strong
conservative, don't-rock-the-boat streak in the French 
that is strangely out of place.  And of course those
who are brought up with this fear of rocking the boat
and being considered slightly outside the boundaries
of polite society pass the same fear along to their
children and anyone else they can impose it on.  Nice
catch, Rory...that's what you're seeing here, all right.  

Never question, always believe what "those in power"
tell you, ridicule those who don't.  Potent formula
for staying "in the box."
