The most fascinating thing about the Letterman/Palin story is that (except for Amy Siskind, which I linked to last week) the rightwing, (even though it was politically advantageous to do so), took the lead from the lefties in defense of women against sexism. The best the left had to offer was that Letterman's joke was "in poor taste." Instead of calling it what it is, "sexism." The words "poor taste" just swept the whole ugly mess under the rug so that it will remain acceptable to attack a woman for her sex in the future. I got a lot of flak last week for defending Palin because I agreed with Siskind that a sexist attack on a woman is a sexist attack whether the woman is a liberal or a conservative. The lefties who rationalized that Palin "deserved" sexist attacks are the same lefty sexists that attacked Hillary during her primary, dredging up the tired old sexist attacks the rightwing had been using for 15 years. This election season has proven beyond a doubt that neither the right nor the left has any credibility when it comes to standing up for women against sexism. In fact both are quiet happy to perpetuate it. Hypocrites.
