I've thought that before.   One should read Crowley's "Soul of the Dessert." Where there is nothing to distract one from the spaciousness ones mind is more able to see what is.

That said, there's some experiencial, if not scientific, proof for visions being induced by the naturally occuring DMT and 5 MEO-DMT in the brain.  However, and yes, while it's possible that acid could push nutters over the brink, its usual manifestation in experience is to show people their delusory values, personality games, the superficially of narrow-minded goals, and the transience of materialism.

While Muslims would deny being materialistic, they nonetheless are so, and the outcry about the selfish, imperialistic West, or selfish Israel, or demonic caucasian has to do with material, not spiritual, values. Whether one holds as dear or reacts to materialm, it still is materialistic. This is why to me Bin Laden is in bed with Bush and Co. They are one, like two sides of a shekel.

Does anyone here know Richard Chorley? He traveled
through the Middle East some years ago. His theory
is that three of the world's great religions started there
because it's so freakin' hot that people's brains boil,
which prompts hallucinations, which lead to religions.

Under that theory, LSD might simply compound the
problem by generating another religion.
