I don't think it's poverty per se, but the huge discrepency in the economic status of the ruling elite and the masses. Great wealth from oil has flowed into the middle east in the past 50 yrs but has flowed almost exclusively to the upper 5% who live well-publicized extravagent, decadent lifestyles and perceived to be under the sway of western powers and culture. Bin laden was born into a superrich family but is respected among the disaffected massses because he gave up a potential western playboy lifestyle to live stoically and fight with the mujahideen against the soviets in afganistan. I think the radical fundamentalist mindset is the bigger problem, but economic frustration plays a role.
