A very good reason to get rid of religion altogether.   In the tinfoil 
hat crowd there is a belief that one of the alien forces that have been 
running us in their mazes introduced religion to see what effect it 
has.  Maybe mantras do nothing more than just stimulate our brains to 
give us some kind of high and that is it.

And as you *almost* point out religions get institutionalized when some 
king decides it is useful for subjugating people.  IOW, another 
distraction to keep from toppling him.  Usually they goof up and get 
toppled anyway just as the Bushites will be source of their own toppling.
