Hi Cheryl,
I received a copy of an email that you had forwarded to someone with a message from Laura Calvert describing her current very serious health problems. I had met her a few times before and was glad to have the opportunity to call her. She has been flooded by phone calls from
friends and even strangers concerned for her wellbeing. She is deeply appreciative of the love and thoughtfulness shown by everyone but she is also feeling a bit embarrased. It turns out that the diagnosis of liver cancer was actually a misunderstanding and the condition she does have is not currently life threatening. She sounded very upbeat as her email would suggest but she is still a very sick woman. As she mentioned she does have breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body including the liver but it is slow growing and she hopes to address this with a return trip to Dr Raju in India. Her main battle is with the pain in her back caused by compressed disks. It was this pain that initially brought her to the hospital and which will continue to be treated for at least the next 3-4 weeks.
As I mentioned earlier she is feeling embarrassed by any misunderstanding she might have made about her condition and as soon as she can arrange it she will be sending out another email to set the record straight. In
the mean time she asked me to contact those people that I know who might have received her first email to let them know that she's not about to depart the world and to please not continue forwarding her original email.
She has been deeply moved by the concern of everyone who has contacted her and somehow this whole experience has, I feel, deep and lasting consequences for us all. I think we've all been uplifted by her strength and spirit while Laura has been enfolded in love and attention that can only help to heal her.
Thanks for helping me find out about Laura's condition. Even though her illness was not as serious as first thought I am glad I had the opportunity to contact her.
