In Dzogchen practice, there are series of practices called the Rushen (ROO-shen), which are techniques to directly understand how samsara and nirvana intertwine, specifically what projections you, yourself have. In some cases, it's recommended the student go to someplace remote, as often past-life atavisms reemerge and are intended to be let go freely, even if that includes bizarre behavior like howling or various animal noises. Once worked through, you not only supposedly seal off the "lower realms" (that is you stop reincarnating below the human level) but it makes it much easier to receive pointing-out instructions and Direct Introduction to states of Unity Consciousness.
