Johnson, who remarked afterword that he just gave the south to the republicans, which in fact was true as southern bigots felt betrayed by the democrats who championed civil rights and began switching in droves to the republican party which is how it stands today.  Fact is more republicans voted for the civil rights legislation than democrats.
