OMG!!!  First, to somehow equate the republican party of 140 yrs ago
to today's party is ridiculous.  Today's republicans have little in
common with goldwater much less lincoln.

2nd, the civil rights legislation was introduced by pres. kennedy and
led through the house and senate by democrats.  IT was opposed by the
South - both democrat and republican - with a few exceptions like
Johnson of Texas.  Finally signed into law by Pres. Johnson, who
remarked afterword that he just gave the south to the republicans,
which in fact was true as southern bigots felt betrayed by the
democrats who championed civil rights and began switching in droves to
the republican party which is how it stands today.

Fact is more republicans voted for the civil rights legislation than democrats. It would not have passed if it had not been for republican support
