Excellent post. But it should be pointed out that this discussion was never really about racism and the evils of segregation; it was about smearing Democrats. So thoughtful points about the race situation in the '50s and '60s, North or South, or about the realities of legislative politics, or even the historical facts of the smearee's career, are fundamentally irrelevant to those perpetrating the smear.
