Seize the time! For years, I had a big poster of Eldridge Cleaver on my wall. At some point in the late '60s I was getting rid of some stuff in my apartment I didn't need, pots and pans and things. I had just read about the Black Panthers starting a breakfast program for kids and thought maybe they could use them. So I packed up a box and took a taxi up to Harlem, where their office was. The woman who took the things from me was quite pleasant and thanked me, but I could see her shaking her head mentally at the middle-class white chick cabbing it from downtown to the ghetto to drop off some old kitchen equipment for the Black Panthers.
