Before Dubya's "war on terra" the Taliban had instituted an end to the poppy growing. We couldn't have that because that's a way for our covert agencies could finance their operations is through drug sales. I do recall an excellent grade of keef coming out of Afghanistan in the late 60's. ;-) I'm sure Afghanistan were left to it's own resources they would be happy to sell the US lithium as a trading partner just like Vietnam has become our trading partner.
