I wouldn't do it by email. I'd get some expensive-looking stationery and put together something as dignified and impressive as you can make it, complete with good-quality photos if possible (of the sandals and of him wearing them). If you know a PR person, ask him or her to help you write the letter. Choose the best-looking stamps you can find. Make it *special*. If you put some real effort into the offer, make the recipients feel important, you're more likely to get a good price. This really is a special item, and it deserves that kind of treatment.
