As I was reminded this morning, I do this in real life as well. I was checking out at HyVee, and the guy bagging my groceries asked me if I'd been to the farmers market. I replied, "Yes", and he asked if I saw so-and-so, the guy who makes Adirondack chairs. I looked at him blankly and told him I had no idea, I go there for food. From my perspective, the people selling craft items are so filtered out of my attention that they may as well not even exist.
