According to Monier-Williams, mantras with /aum/
are for /shuudras/. From the linguistic point of view,
we guess /aum/ can be considered the /vRddhi-grade/ "of"
/om/ which in its turn may be contraction of a + u + m !
~;0
u = u ("normal" grade; e.g. 'su' = to press)
a + u = o (guNa grade; e.g. 'soma')
aa + u = au (vRddhi grade; e.g. 'saumya' = relating to 'soma')
