"A program in Woodbury County that provides tax rebates for
farmers converting their lands to organic production was the subject
of a brief discussion at Monday's meeting of the Jefferson County
Board of Supervisors.
Supervisor Steve Burgmeier presented a copy of Woodbury
County's policy for board members to review. He said the program
provides help for farmers during the three-year conversion process
required in order to get organic certification.
Burgmeier said Woodbury County provides $50,000 per year for
the program out of its general fund, but he also said Woodbury is "a
wealthier county, valuation-wise."
Burgmeier said he isn't sure a program like Woodbury County's
would be good for Jefferson County.
"There's probably more pollution when you go organic because
you've got to till the ground so many more times," he said.
