Not that I believe it necessary or, indeed, that such a thing has a 
place in the TMO (I don't), but according to a story related by 
Muktananda, it IS possible.  

In fact, it is a story that I've seen reproduced here on FFL at 
least once.

The story goes something like this: an acolyte approached a guru 
seeking to become one of his disciples.  the aspiring disciple was 
turned down by the guru again and again.  The acolyte then went 
home, built a statue out of clay of the guru and began to worship it 
and to attune himself to the statue, ultimately gaining 
enlightenment.
