(4/20) Fairfield Police Department Reminds Cyclists Of Bicycle Regulations And Laws
The Fairfield Police Department would like to remind bicyclists that under city ordinance 10.58.010 they must obey the rules of the road just as a motor vehicle operator does or they’ll receive the same fines. Citations cyclists receive are considered “moving violations” and can not only affect their motor vehicle driving record but can also cause insurance rates to go up. The Fairfield Police Department says that the most common cycling violations are failure to obey a traffic light or sign and riding the wrong way down a one-way street. Cyclists are also reminded that they must walk their bicycles on the sidewalks of the central business district and are required to have a proper headlight visible from 300 feet on the front and either a red light or reflector visible from the read from a half hour before sunset to a half hour before sunrise. If cyclists wish to carry more than one rider the bike must be equipped with the proper seat, pedals and handlebars. Young or inexperienced cyclists are encouraged to walk their bikes across busy streets and everyone is encouraged to wear a bicycle safety helmet.
