Yup, the "glue" that the "enlightened ones" experience as "God" or 
whatever you want to call it such as "the transcendent."  The research 
would to prove it to the unenlightened masses.

I'm sure however it will provide a lot of side benefits such as 
technological advances, some good and some probably VERY bad.
