Galveston Hurricane estimates range from 4,000 to 11,000 dead. Clearly no one really knows. Sept 8, 1900 was before anyone could predict hurricanes or give more than a few hours' warning. When your city lies 8 to 9 feet above sea level and the storm surge is 15 feet topped by 20 foot waves, you're in trouble. That was Galveston's situation. Utterly destroyed. But it was completely rebuilt in fairly short order and is now very well protected by a massive seawall.
