According to this site, people who are initiated into Sannyasa (as 
Guru Dev was at age 34) wear saffron/orange robes. Maharishi never did 
this, so he's wearing the white robe, traditional garb of the 
brahmachari:

"From this time onwards, he was known as Brahmachari Rabinarayan or 
Rabin Brahmachari. His dress was white in color, his food was the 
simple food of the Ashram. Most of his time was spent in meditation
