Don't you realize that the Inquisition still exists? It is now called The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.
Yep, it was always male-dominated, church-appointed accusers but the "civil authorities" enacted the torture and punishment. Sorta like the current inquisitions into the possible heresies of various earth-hugging nun orders. However, now they can only excommunicate them unless they repent their errors.
