Well, in that case, my first answer above applies.
I'd never given it a moment's thought.  My issue 
is with the toadiness, not with the sincerity or
insincerity of his devotion.  If that's your
concern, you can ponder it all you want. 

The only thing I can think of to say on the subject
is that if his devotion is "apparent," it's because
he *wants* it to be "apparent."  That is, my suspicion
is that his desire is more to be *perceived* as 
devoted than it is to be devoted.
