Norway is indeed a wonderful country. I enjoyed visiting / business trips there. But comparing countries is kind of a mixed bag. Norway is actually the #3 country regarding per capita income -- albeit the top two are small countries. But Norway is only $100 a year above the US -- a difference of about .2%. Given the size and diversity of the US, thats significant. http://www.nationmaster.com/graph-T/eco_gdp_cap The US is top in Education: Total expenditure as % of GDP, at 7%, while Norway is 7th at 5.9. http://www.nationmaster.com/graph-T/edu_tot_exp_as_of_gdp Percentage of students who report high noise level and disorder in classes (2000) is high -- Norway (39%) ranks fourth noisiest -- after Italy, Finland and France. US is 11th at 28% http://www.nationmaster.com/graph-T/edu_stu_att_rep_cla_dis About 60% of students in both Norway and US find school boring -- compared to about 30% in France and Japan. I wonder what causes the difference. http://www.nationmaster.com/graph-T/edu_stu_att_fin_sch_bor In terms of Pollution - Nitrogen Oxides per capita, the us is third, followed by Norway at 6th. Australia is the worst at #1. Germany's levels are 3-4 times lower than Norway and US. http://www.nationmaster.com/graph-T/env_pol_nit_oxi_per_cap Surprisingly (to me), tax levels are not that high, relatively, in Norway. 37% in Norway(16th), 30% in US (21st). Germany, Sweeden and France are near 50%. Canada is lower (barely) than the US In this metric, the percentage of gross earnings given up in tax, including any social security contributions. Calculated for a single worker without children, earning 100 % of the average wage. http://www.nationmaster.com/graph-T/env_pol_nit_oxi_per_cap 14% of Norwegians are not proud of their nationality, compared to 2% in US. http://www.nationmaster.com/graph-T/lif_not_pro_of_the_nat In terms of life expetancy -- the average number of years to be lived by a group of people born in the same year, if mortality at each age remains constant in the future. Life expectancy at birth is also a measure of overall quality of life in a country and summarizes the mortality at all ages. It can also be thought of as indicating the potential return on investment in human capital and is necessary for the calculation of various actuarial measures. Norway is 20th at 79 years, the US 48th at 77 years -- the US virtually tied with Cuba at 51st.Australia and Japan are in the top 6, at about 80 years. http://www.nationmaster.com/graph-T/hea_lif_exp_at_bir_tot_pop Rapes per capita are about half in Norway relative to theUS. But he US, is almost a third less than Australia and Canada. http://www.nationmaster.com/graph-T/cri_rap_cap Norway is the most educated of all countries, in terms of school life expectancy and transition from primary to secondary for school years 1998/99 and 1999/00, published in http://www.uis.unesco.org accessed on Sept. 2002 and Women's Indicators and Statistics Database (Wistat), Version 4, CD-ROM (United Nations publication, Sales No. E.00.XVII.4) based on data provided by UNESCO in 1999. The US is 14th, about a year and a half under Norway. Australia, Finland abd UK are 2nd, 3rd and 4th, close to Norway. http://www.nationmaster.com/graph-T/edu_sch_lif_exp_tot In terms of happiness, proportion of people who answered the survey question: "Taking all things together, would you say you are: very happy, quite happy, not very happy, or not at all happy?" by stating that they were "Very happy". Venezula is first at 55%. Perhaps Chavez is doing ok. Ireland is #3 and is also by far the highest consumer per capita of beer. US is 8th at 39%. Norway 20th is at 29%. Italy is 33rd at 13% ------------------------ Yahoo! Groups Sponsor --------------------~--> Get fast access to your favorite Yahoo! Groups.
