You just have to be minimally careful these days with cars - oil change every 5K miles will keep the engine running forever, and it is easy to do yourself. Keep enough water in the radiator, proper inflation for the tires, and check for cracked hoses and belts. Car troubles are something serious these days because people can't afford to keep their cars up and they aren't buying a new one every few years to avoid the hassle of breakdowns. And if someone hits your car and totals it, you're unlikely to get enough from the insurance company to replace it with a decent ride. Turq is right, America sucks!
