Maybe they dwell on something that happened in the distant past because that's
the single most important thing that ever happened to them. In some cases, that
becomes the most important topic of conversation for them and they talk about
it constantly, trying to put it all together and make sense out of their life -
what's left of it.

Often, you can hear them mutter to themselves "What happened - where did all
the time go?" Some older people can remember in detail down to the date and
time some things that happened to them a long time ago - but they can't
remember what they posted yesterday, so they repeat themselves.

Usually younger people want to talk about where they are going more than where
they have been. But, when people get old they realize they're probably only
going to the nursing home. When they realize that, they really begin to wax
nostalgic about the good old days!

However, there are a few who do get reborn in their older years - they become
like children again and thankful just to be alive - they don't worry about the
past anymore, they look forward to every new morning. "Those not busy being
born are busy dying." - Bob Dylan

Some say that awakening can only be found in solitude, quiet darkness. I found
it in mid-afternoon on the corner of rush-hour traffic!
