I'm not really "fascinated" with the pirate era. I only watched
"Crossbones" to see what Malkovich brought to the series. American
network television often tends to be too much just filler between
commercials. "Crossbones" failed in the ratings and the final episodes
relegated to Saturday known as a dead night in TV. I was finding myself
reluctantly dragging myself to watch the last few episodes.
In the meantime I've caught up on "True Detectives" which turned out to
be an eight hour indie movie. The final season of "True Blood" which
has gotten about as ridiculous as "24" and should have had a stake
driven through it at season 4. And then we have Damon Lindelof's latest
interpretation of the computer game "Myst" as a TV series (the game was
also the inspiration for "Lost") called "Leftovers". Guess he never
figured out how to solve the game in just a few minutes.
Season 2 of "Utopia" shows what can be done with television. Interesting
that similar themed series are popping up on places like the Lifetime
channel? They've got one called "The Lottery" but is weak unlike their
"adopted" "Those Who Kill" which for some reason as pulled from A&E.
Similarly the Netflix produced season 4 of "The Killing" was stunning
and shows what can be done again if you aren't just making a show as a
filler between commercials.
Last night after some of that viewing I took a look at a locally
produced indie film called "Love, Concord" which is currently available
on Hulu. It's a weird film whose target market should be teens but not
rated (in fact to watch it on Popcornflix where it is also playing they
ask for you to prove you are 18 or older). That for just some "f"
words. It was a bit flat arc wise but fun to watch to see recognizable
local places including a gas station that I used to take my car to get
smog checked. It's only a couple miles down the road from me. They
also shot some scenes in downtown but those apparently went to the
"cutting room floor".

I think that Bhairitu and I have both mentioned the two "Pirate" TV
series that have come out recently. For the record, I don't give a
hoot whether someone prefers "Crossbones" (starring John Malcovich) to
the earlier (and...ahem...better) series "Black Sails," from STARZ.
I watched both series faithfully, and enjoyed both of them immensely.
But I've said since Day One of seeing "Crossbones" that it just wasn't
up to "Black Sails" standards. Go figure. The viewing audiences seem
to agree. Mark my words...STARZ is a creative force to be watched...
