The City Council pledged to work with other governments, non-profit organisations, and large banks around the world to establish agricultural projects on 250 million acres of unused agricultural land in developing countries. Local poor people will be hired at good wages to farm the lands, and housing and schools will also be provided for them, according to Dr. Bob Wynne, the Mayor of Maharishi Vedic City. The start-up costs for this project to permanently eradicate poverty in the world are estimated to be only $100 billion over a 2 to 3 year period of time, and then to be self-sufficient after that. Dr. Wynne said the need is urgent-and the solution is available. According to the United Nations Human Development Report 2005, 1.2 billion people in the world live in extreme poverty earning less than $1 per day. And according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, there are 40 developing countries alone that have more than 2.5 billion acres of unutilised land with agricultural potential. "As long as extreme poverty exists in the world, then individual peace and individual health, which is the basis of world peace, will be impossible to attain," Dr. Wynne said.
