That's hilarious, Mike. Have you ever read Roger Zelazny's "Lord Of Light?"
It's an award-winning science fiction novel that takes the Hindu pantheon and
recreates it within a scifi context. On a distant world, some of the original
astronauts from Earth (now gone) have given themselves the powers and the names
of the Hindu gods. They live in an atomic-powered Brahmaloka above the planet,
dispensing boons to the peons who live down on the surface. Into all of this is
reborn the Buddha figure, one Mahasamatman, who preferred to drop the Maha- and
the -atman and just call himself Sam. It's a wonderful book.
But what made me remember it and smile was your one-liner below. I read it and
in my head I had instantly recreated the entire Hindu pantheon -- dressed in
cowboy style at a Texas barbeque. You really haven't lived until you've seen
Hindu gods and goddesses line dancing. :-)

Indeed. I've really never gotten this.
It's a practice seemingly based on the belief that not only are there gods out
there, they're so petty that their favors can be attained by giving them a dead
cow.
