Original? Hardly. He was one of many so-called gurus who left India to make a
damn good living in the West.
Hard working? By the testimony of those around him, yes.
Personable? Sometimes, particularly if the person he was being personable to
was a millionaire, billionaire, or scientist he was flattering to get money or
publicity from. The rest of the time he often acted like a spoiled adolescent
brat.
Courageous? Bull manure - in what way? Bold, yes. But courageous? Not one bit.
He was too cowardly to admit he real agendas for one thing.
I also take issue with those who claim he was instrumental in spreading
meditation to the West. Had he not existed at all, it would have happened
anyway. The ONLY thing that set him apart from the pack of "I'm enlightened and
you'll get something special from me" jackals like Rajneesh, Muktananda, etc
that flooded the West was his connection with the BEATLES that made all the
reporters in the world come flocking to him. The Beatles few months with him
gave him publicity that lasted his entire lifetime.
As to being holy man - I remember an old black and white video tape where M
was talking about angels. There was this one big fat white guy who had a big
bushy beard and a big afro style hair do, wearing some kind of tee shirt and
jeans who stood up to ask a question and prefaced the query by saying "Oh,
great holy sage...blah blah blah."
He might have thought M was holy. But as Jay-sus supposedly said "By their
fruits you shall know them." Looking at Marshy's fruits, he was a liar, con
artist, huckster, snake oil and nostrum salesman, sexual opportunist and
exploiter."

I see that early followers of MMY commonly referred to Maharishi as "His
Holiness". (At least amongst themselves. Do any FFLifers who actually met
Maharishi ever remember addressing him in person as "Your Holiness"?)
Now the Queen of England is properly addressed as "Her Majesty"? So is she
actually *majestic*? I wouldn't know(!) - but anyway it's irrelevant as the
title is just a convention. But I'm not aware of any convention sanctified by
tradition that would warrant MMY being entitled to a "Your Holiness" tag.
So the use of such a formula could only be justified if people were otherwise
convinced that Maharishi was indeed a holy man. Is there any such evidence?

Speaking for myself, I would hate to be called "Holy Seraphita". Firstly, I am
emphatically *not* particularly virtuous or self-abnegating. What am I saying?
I'm not virtuous or self-abnegating full-stop. And secondly, it's surely
proof-positive that someone is not holy if they encourage others to call them
by that label.
