The first word of the Hebrew Bible (tanakh) is bereshit or b'reshit ( ~ bresheet).
As the first niqqud (vowel diacritic under bet) is sheva, it can't mean in the beginning but rather in (a) beginning. 'In the beginning' would be bareshit (b[e] + ha + reshit)!
