By singularity, I meant the time when machines will be smarter than humans. At least, that's what Kurzweil is predicting. In a sense, this goal could actually keep many computer scientists employed for a very long time. IMO, these efforts are more likely going to create machines that are efficient and can collect and process an enormous amount of data. But they may not be intelligent, and may still need human beings to interpret and use the data.
Intelligence in machines probably would have to arrive by possessing Being, the spark of self-reflection. Silicon based materials may not be able to deliver this objective. IMO, biological systems are probably the only ones that can attain this spark of reflection or the goal of intelligence. This brings us to another point: will apes and monkeys eventually develop intelligence and self-reflection through genetic manipulation. And would this be legal? ---In [email protected], <richard@...> wrote : "The widely accepted age of the universe, as estimated by general relativity, is 13.8 billion years. In the beginning, everything in existence is thought to have occupied a single infinitely dense point, or singularity. Although the Big Bang singularity arises directly and unavoidably from the mathematics of general relativity, some scientists see it as problematic because the math can explain only what happened immediately after—not at or before—the singularity."
