Dattatreya lived about 2500 BC, so I have my doubts if this was the  
historical person who initiated him. He was a key figure for the pre- 
Aryan tribes of India. The figure of Dattatreya has morphed over  
time, particularly since Hinduism became more Vaishnavite/ 
Materialistic/puritanical in the kali-yuga.
