We two, of course, will recall that as being the theme tune of the BBC series
Take Three Girls.

One thing that strikes me when I watch footage from back then is that all the
performers are professional musicians committed to their craft. Even when it's
a band I don't appreciate you always get that sense that the guys on stage are
true artists. (This is where I would add a bit about most modern stars being
manufactured, corporation-owned, image-obsessed phonies but you might take me
for a fossil . . . )

People having to be trained before treading the boards is what is what the
punk revolution aimed to stop, for some reason. It all just got too
disconnected from the audience is a common complaint from those days, with a
bunch of guys noodling incessantly far away on a giant stage. I like a lot of
that stuff but also a lot of the punky bands that blew the place up in the
70's, I used to go to gigs a lot and the difference between a punk gig at the
100 club and a rock band at Hammersmith Odeon was vast, a completely different
vibe. And especially the post-punk effect of everyone having a go instead of
waiting for a grade 7 before starting a band was one of the most creative
periods ever. Some great stuff came out of it but I still like my Yes and
Jethro Tull.

The music industry has been largely abysmal for a long time IMO. I can't
believe boy bands actually think they are deserved respect as artists! And
guitar bands are all anodyne and interchangeable. Part of it is the record
labels signing bands and keeping them silent until the image has been worked on
sufficiently so that it appeals to a large a number possible. It makes
financial sense in these download days but it kills the spirit.

Or maybe I've just heard it all before and the law of diminishing returns from
yet another Led Zep impersonator just doesn't get me excited like it did first
time round.
