Case in point: Maharishi retiring to his room after his heart attack, and
pretty much not budging out of it for years, until he died. He because the
Howard Hughes of spiritual teachers, communicating only by CCTV and with
sycophants who would always treat him as if he were someone to be worshiped,
and never contradict anything he said with any "News at 11" from the world of
reality. This was "living?"
On another level, IMO the fear of death is manifesting more and more lately in
apocalypse fantasies, as if people believe "It won't be so bad if we all go
together." So you've got people -- equally crazy Jewish, Christian, and Muslim
groups and American politicians -- *literally* working 24/7 to try to bring
about the next/last world war and thus "prove" their "scriptures" "right." It's
stuff right out of the dramatized version of such conspiracies on "Dig." And
you've got other people focusing on natural disasters and asteroids or comets
striking the earth, as if they almost *look forward to it*.
Yesterday I watched a movie that I'd missed when it first came out, "Seeking A
Friend For The End Of The World." It's a comedy -- albeit a very dark one --
starring Steve Carroll and Keira Knightly. The basic plot is explained in a
radio voiceover in the film's first words:
Radio Announcer:OK, what we're getting now is, yes, they're saying it was in
fact a fire that erupted inside the external tank of the ship, exactly
ninety-eight seconds after it entered the asteroid field. No one is sure what
caused the fire which led to the massive explosion, killing all twelve crew
members and scientists aboard the space shuttle Deliverance, taking with them
our last and only hope. Once again, if you're just tuning in, the CSA space
shuttle Deliverance has been destroyed. The final mission to save mankind has
failed. The seventy mile wide asteroid known commonly as Matilda is set to
collide with Earth in exactly three weeks time, and we'll be bringing you
up-to-the-minute coverage of our countdown to the 'End of Days', along with
*all* your classic rock favorites. This is Q107.2.
So the world's got three weeks. Some spend it trying to cram in as much
pleasure as possible ("Put on some Radiohead. I want to do heroin to
Radiohead."), some get together with family, some riot, some seem to manage to
put the coming apocalypse completely out of their minds. Sports games continue
on TV, and cops still give out speeding tickets. Not a great movie, or even a
really good one, but it had a few interesting moments, and used the "end of
days" idea to point out how stupidly most of us spend our days.
