I've been donating to the United Way every month since 1970 and sometimes, on a case-by-case basis, I give spare change to homeless people I meet on the street or highway.
Last summer around 4:00 PM I saw an obvious homeless guy carrying a heavy backpack walking on the sidewalk toward Tarrytown in West Austin. Nobody in their right mind would be heading west into that suburb - they don't like homeless people wandering around out there. Anyone with any sense would be heading toward downtown where the soup kitchen is located! It takes a lot of energy to walk around in the heat with a heavy load like that- it takes energy. And, a guy might get thirsty and hungry out there. I wanted to stop and tell him to turn around and head the other way - there's nothing for him where he was heading. By the time he gets to the only store in the neighborhood it will be dark. Where the hell do you think you're going, anyway?" What's up with that? "I have a smartphone, a laptop, and free Wi-Fi is everywhere."
