Someone observed recently that the reason a soldier in a sticky situation - 
when his subjective state is screaming "make a run for it" - nevertheless stays 
put is because he knows that his comrades would do the same for him if they 
were in his place. 

 Having seen the Iraqi Army hightail it on numerous occasions no foot soldier 
can have confidence in the mutual loyalty and support of his fellow combatants. 
In other words, it isn't an "army" in the full sense.
