Microsoft uses a nanny approach to updates that I do not like. Don't
you just love to get nags for updates 10 minutes in when you're doing
something and it may take away focus if you are typing something? And
there have been goofs with updates where indeed folks may want to skip
or delay an update for the moment. So yes, an option to wait or delay
an update or even skip would be good.
This is another reason I love Linux. They put up an unobtrusive icon in
the status bar alerting you there are updates available. Install them
when you want and what ones you want.

Thanks for that reply. I see what you mean about having to re-jig your
already-in-place apps. It could prove to be the start of a tiresome
endurance test.
I notice that the linked article talks about my current Windows 7
giving me the option of whether or not to install updates. True
enough. But do we ever know what the offered update even does? Isn't
that important info to help you decide? Also, if you skip updates 98
to 100 but decide to accept update 101, does update 101 assume you've
already gone for updates 98 to 100? Can it even tell?

You can "reserve" now if you want but you don't have to install when
it comes out. I have a Windows 7 machine that I can't afford to have
Windows 10 break apps on so I might reserve but never use the free
update. Got plenty of time to decide. More here:

No, it's not an off-topic thread. We often discuss computer things here.

Computer query for those of you more tech savvy than me (which is
everyone else on FFL).
My Windows 7 laptop is suddenly offering me a free upgrade to Windows 10.
My questions:
Is it really free - or are there hidden charges?
Is it worth the bother of installing it - or is it more trouble than
it's worth?
Apologies for this off-topic thread - most of you are established in
bliss consciousness and look upon such mundane matters with amused
