Amazing how insane mankind can be, and this is my grandparents generation. Not
far away at all.

It's odd though, I'm reading a book about the Great Escape from Stalagluft
111, that inspired the classic movie. While some of that was dramatic license
most of it was true but the only real reason the break-out became famous was
because most of the escapers were shot. 50 of them, shot in the back by the
Gestapo while they were urinating in fields on lonely country lanes.

What amazes me was not that this action drew enormous outrage, I'm sure most
would agree that it rightly should, but when you look at the insanity all
around - the massive slaughter on the Eastern front etc - I was just a bit
surprised that the Red Cross and allied governments spent any time demanding an
inquiry at the highest level.

The rules of war had been broken you see. That's the odd bit for me: It's OK
for Germany to invade half the world, cause immense suffering and destroy any
amount of priceless European cities, as long as they stick to the rules?

It's all too easy to think of anything counted in the millions as an
abstraction -- even if it's World War II, and the topic at hand is the millions
