Asteroids could definitely destroy human civilizations or set it back to the time of the Dark Ages. It's also nature's way of saying to start a new way of living. This has happened in the recorded past of humanity, such as the time when the earth was destroyed by water during Noah's time.
This could be one of the important reasons for humans to explore and colonize the Moon and Mars. Humans on these new worlds could help preserve the knowledge throughout history in case the civilizations on earth are destroyed.
