| | Dear Community,I strongly urge you to join me at the Annual Meeting of the
Jefferson County Farmers and Neighbors, Inc. (JFAN), “More CAFOs Are Coming –
What YOU Can Do.” This year’s meeting, to be held on Wednesday, October 7, at
7:15 pm at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center, has been especially designed
to address the increasing number of CAFOs converging on Jefferson County and
across Iowa, with community organizing and activism as the meeting’s core
purpose. Attending the JFAN Annual Meeting is one of the most important things
we all can do to protect our community’s interests against infringing CAFOs.
When we show up in force to pack the Sondheim, our solidarity sends a powerful
message to the pork industry that our community will not tolerate unwanted
CAFOs. At this year’s empowering meeting, seasoned CAFO fighter Joe Maxwell,
Senior Political Director of the Humane Society Legislative Fund, will present
practical strategies to help us all fight back against unwanted CAFOs,
including a menu of concrete actions that any of us can take, no matter where
we live or what our interests may be. As a former Missouri legislator, Maxwell
will speak on what it takes to get people politically motivated to demand
better protections and to stand up for our basic human rights to clean air,
clean water, and safe food. And because we can all influence change with our
spending dollars, Maxwell will place special emphasis on becoming an Activist
Consumer. He is a powerful orator that you will not want to miss.Maxwell grew
up on a family farm and is a long-time advocate for humane, independent,
traditional farming practices. He served for 14 years in the Missouri State
Legislature as a State Representative, State Senator, and Lt. Governor. Four
years ago he joined the Humane Society to oversee its Rural Outreach program.
He has been a powerful advocate for traditional family farming practices while
fighting against large-scale, industrialized livestock facilities. JFAN has
worked tirelessly for over a decade to protect our community against CAFOs—but
no community is safe today from the expansion of corporate pork production. If
protecting our precious Fairfield community from CAFO infringement is as
important to you as it is to me, I strongly urge you to attend this year’s JFAN
Annual Meeting. It’s an easy and enjoyable way to do something positive, and
frankly very necessary, for the security and well-being of us all. Please mark
your calendar for October 7 and join me at the Sondheim Theater for “More CAFOs
Are Coming – What YOU Can Do.” Thank you in advance for your attendance and
support. With all best wishes,John Hagelin, Ph.D.P.S. Please note that the JFAN
Annual Meeting begins a little earlier this year at 7:15 pm. | |
